Great Stonington Vineyards
Stonington Vineyards is one of the founders of
Connecticut Wine Trail in the United States. Its "Oak Barrel Fermented Chardonnay Dry White" and "Seaport White" and "Triad Rose" are the most famous. In addition, Stonington produces Vidal Blanc, Gewurztraminer, Reisling and Cabernet Franc wines.
The Stonington Winery was founded in 1987 by Nick and Happy Smith, who bought 58 acres of land 10 years ago on the Stonington Uplands, where wine grapes were grown. Two years later, in 1989, the construction of the Winery was completed. Stonington combines the latest wine-making techniques with traditional barrel fermentation. Initially, Mike McAndrew worked as a winemaker at Stonington. He gained a high reputation for producing high-quality European-style meals.
Great wines come from great vineyards, and Stonington is no exception. The vineyard of the winery is situated on a hillside facing south. The soil is ice-packed soil with good drainage. Because of its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, vineyards have an oceanic climate, unlike Bordeaux, which has a relatively cool vineyard growing season for a long time. Most of Stonington's wines are sold in tasting rooms, while the rest are sold on average to quality restaurants and wine stores in Connecticut and Rhode Island. The winery currently produces about 5,000 boxes per year.
