About Cape Hatteras Lighthouse

Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is located on Hatteras Island, North Carolina, USA. It is part of the coast of Cape Hatteras Country. Since the Civil War, lighthouses have guarded ships passing through this sea area known as the Graveyard of the Atlantic.

The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse was first built in 1803. It is the tallest lighthouse built of bricks in the world. It is 200 feet high (61 meters) and weighs 4,800 tons. It is the 23rd traditional lighthouse in the world. Over the years, sea water has been eroding the sand around the lighthouse, squeezing the foundations within 160 feet. In 2000, due to the offset of the coastline, the landmark moved 0.8 kilometers inland. It took 1.25 million bricks to build the tallest lighthouse in the United States, and every 7.5 seconds the huge building emitted a light to help ships navigate the Atlantic Cemetery. In sunny weather, you can see it from 32 kilometers away. The tower is a striking brick red, supporting the black and white spiral stripes composed of the tower body, standing high in the air, very eye-catching, is extraordinarily magnificent.
