Why Rhode Island nickname is ocean state?
Rhode Island is nicknamed the ocean state because it has dozens of miles of coastline in the Atlantic Ocean, each of which is full of amazing beauty. Rhode Island has the longest coastline to total area ratio among all States in the United States. Although only 37 miles (60 kilometers) wide and 48 miles (77 kilometers) long, Rhode Island's coastline is 400 miles (644 kilometers) long. This is largely due to the 30 islands surrounding Narragansett Bay in the eastern part of the state.
