About Reitz’s former residence Museum
Located in the center of Evansville, Reitz's former residence museum is the only Victorian Museum of former residence in
Indiana. Its name comes from the House Builder John Augustus Reitz. Reitz, as a famous American entrepreneur, industrialist, philanthropist and banker, built the French Second Empire style building in 1871 to show his status and reputation.
After Reitz's death in 1890, his son continued the mansion and redecorated the interior as Victorian. The beautiful building was listed as a national historic site in 1973. The decoration in the mansion always keeps the original style. The French gilded chandeliers, wood parquet floors, marble fireplaces, stained glass windows, hand-painted ceilings, etc. show the luxury of the house. This luxurious former residence was opened as a museum in 1973, mainly to let people know the life style and living environment of the nobles at that time.
