Terrain formation in St. Louis
The terrain of St. Louis is mostly plain or gentle hills, but the riverside areas are dominated by large valleys and impact plains. Most cities are built on stepped highlands about 20-50 metres above the West Bank of the Mississippi River. The underground rocks are mainly limestone and dolomite. The southern part of the urban area belongs to karst terrain, and there are many falling water tunnels. However, most of them have been closed in the process of urban development, and a large number of springs are distributed along the river area. The Des Peres River runs through the southern end of the city, except that all the natural rivers in the city run underground. The downstream of Des Peres River is often at risk of flooding.
